I have good news, I think I was able to fix it! Each of our pages had a HEAD directive to emulate the rendering behavior of IE7, which is what was causing trouble. I removed it, so IE8 is rendering in standards mode by default, and we look great in it! Just like in Firefox.
I don't think we should care about IE7 look of the website at this point.
That's strange, I noticed the same thing and removed all of the meta tags - but I guess the svn commit didn't go through correctly. Revision 624 contained the edit to the page.tpl.php file, but I went back and removed the rest of the occurrences and apparently they never made it up. That is why this is a community effort :)
Ugh, Microsoft, the bane of my existence. I get everything to validate and then it is ugly in IE8. I'll get it fixed up.
